Who needs a microbrewery or malt beverage manufacturer license in South Dakota?

Issued by South Dakota Department of Revenue, at step 5 of 6 in the opening sequence: alcohol permits.

1 of the 20 kinds of business in South Dakota

The state license is applied for directly with the Department of Revenue, not the city. A manufacturer may sell its own beer to consumers at the brewery for on-sale and off-sale consumption; the federal TTB brewer’s notice comes first and the premises must pass zoning and the Department of Health food license if food is served. Ask the Department whether your taproom plan also needs the city’s malt beverage retail license.

Step 5 of 6: Alcohol permits

  1. Set up the business
  2. Register for tax
  3. Approve the space
  4. Get the permits for your kind of business
  5. Alcohol permits
  6. Before the first hire
