Who needs a food establishment permit in Nebraska?

Issued by Nebraska Department of Agriculture, Food Safety Program (or the Lincoln-Lancaster County and Douglas County health departments in their counties), at step 4 of 6 in the opening sequence: get the permits for your kind of business.

9 of the 20 kinds of business in Nebraska

Submit the request for permit with the floor plan, menu and equipment list before building out, then pass the opening inspection. In Omaha the Douglas County Health Department takes the application at least 14 days before opening and collects the state permit fee; in Lincoln the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department permits and inspects under its own program. Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, bakeries and ice cream shops are all food establishments under the Act. Ask the Food Safety Program for the current initial and annual fee before budgeting; the Department resets them each July.
